FUJI XEROX JOINS ECO-PATENT COMMONS

PLEDGING TWO WASTEWATER TREATMENT PATENTS

TOKYO, October 21, 2009 – Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. has joined the Eco-Patent Commons, coordinated by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), by pledging two patents concerning wastewater treatment.

The processes under the patents enable efficient treatment of wastewater discharged from factories by coagulation and separation of specific chemical substances in wastewater utilizing Polysilicato-Iron or separating surfactant, and reduce quantities of the coagulant and the resulted sludge without harming the environment.

The Eco-Patent Commons is an initiative launched in January 2008 by the WBCSD and IBM, Nokia, Pitney Bowes as well as Sony. It is a first-of-its-kind business effort to help the environment by pledging environmentally-beneficial patents to the public domain. The objectives of the Eco-Patent Commons are to facilitate the use of existing technologies to protect the environment, as well as to encourage collaboration between businesses that foster new innovations.
The Eco-Patent Commons is a pledged patent portfolio which is available on a dedicated, public website hosted by WBCSDNote 1, and the portfolio is open to anybody on the condition that they use it for environment protection. Members other than those listed above include Xerox Corp., Bosch, DuPont, Taisei, Ricoh and The Dow Chemical Company, as of October 2009.

The Eco-Patent Commons members and the WBCSD are calling for wider participation in promoting collaboration and innovation for global environmental protection. Responding to this call, Fuji Xerox has joined the initiative to support further development of the Commons.
